(Posting this in parts to prevent a massive wall of text)
After the feedback from yesterday's group meeting I decided that Lucas' ideas could give me a lot more to work with. His uses a lot more tactics and relies less on random numbers. With that being said, I am working with inspiration from his Triple Triad/game mechanic.
He mentioned issues with trying to make a realistic food web, and how difficult it was to make it work. Kids are very very picky, and they won't play something that doesn't make sense to them.
Back to Triple Triad. It is a Final Fantasy battle game played on a grid. You have to beat the other cards that are right next you, using the numbers corresponding to the sides of the card.
When you beat a card, you control it. It becomes your colour, which can result in interesting combos across the grid.
I want to do something similar, but without the massive chain reactions. I will use points as well, to make this digital game a lot more simpler in the physical space.
My narrative is as follows:
You are at the top of the foodchain. The ruler of your ecosystem. Because of global warming, the world is changing. Ecosystems are beginning to interact with each other. Steal resources. Destroy habitats.
As the leader of your ecosystem, you must work together with the other plants and animals to ensure your ecosystem survives. Sometimes you'll have to take drastic measures... and take from the other ecosystems.
The object of my game is to try and control the board with the most points possible.
