Logo colourways

I worked on some different colourways for the logo that can be experimented with, using the palette as inspiration.

Kakapo Models 8 (Final)

The final repainted models look a lot better and even look a bit more professionally painted too. Drybrushing really brings out the textures I made as well.

All the kakapo and nests, plus two spares (yellow and orange).

Red (red > orange > yellow orange > yellow > white)

Gold (bronze > gold > yellow gold > white)

Bronze (dark bronze > bronze > gold > white)

Pink (pink > light pink > white)

Turquoise (turquoise > light blue > lighter blue/yellow > white)

Light blue (light blue > lighter blue > white > white)

Feedback

So the previous models do not work well with the board. There is no colour harmony and I probably went too far with arbitrarily picking colours. The purple is too dark and the silver doesn't work at all.

The best thing I can do is repaint them, and try to make the colours harmonise a bit more. For the default kakapo I will try doing split complimentary of something. Time to repaint!

Process

First I applied a new base coat to all nests.

I drybrushed an orange on top of the red. The washes I used in the previous
iterations were making the models too dark, so I decided to not put a
wash on for these ones.

The model after 3 drybrushing layers. Red > Orange > Yellow Orange > White.

The red model looks a lot nicer so I decided I will repaint all 6 models using a drybrushing technique.

Kakapo Models 6

I painted all of the kakapo nests. During this process, we as a team decided that the trees weren't representative of kakapo nests. So we stuck with these.

I handpainted these all. The pipes are also removable and you can mix and match them for further customisation. Each nest has a base coat, a wash, and another base coat applied for detailing. They are not varnished so kids can add more paint detailing as they wish. I tried a variety of colours and used solids and metallics.

Kakapo Models 5

I made some more models. I got some feedback of how I can 3D print a tree for the center. Unfortunately, it is very hard to 3D print a rimu tree in one piece.

I also had my kakapo nest remodelled so that little camera pipe things look into the nest to mimic how scientists watch kakapo and that human intervention has helped the kakapo survive.

However, the pipe obstructs the view and the tree looks like cauliflower. lol.

Logo Designs

Using Zoe's logo as a starting point I wanted to make a new logo, using the shapes that are quite abundant in our game so our text doesn't look 'floaty'.

I whipped up a quick draft using a semicircle base to anchor the text. That semicircle became the cave and the text will rest on a log.

I put the kakapo in using the same pose that Zoe had, but added the cat which causes a lot of tension in our game.

Flat colours.

Final logo designs using our chosen font for the game board. The big one will go on the board game packaging whereas the smaller one will be used in other places, such as model packaging.

Kakapo Models 4

I prime my models with black primer if I am painting with metallics, and white primer if I am using solid colours. As you can see, I do like my metallics a lot. I had metallic kakapo for playtesting and the children seemed to enjoy them more than the solid basic colours.

To do this, I apply a solid base color, then a darker shade wash to get into the cracks, and then I reapply the base. The wash is quite tricky for me to use because my edges are far too smoth and the wash doesn't settle properly...
