This was my first go at putting together a game. I began with some of the mechanics of Phylo and Triple Triad that i had encountered earlier and thought they would be a great place to start.
At this point the only goal was to create the biggest food web. Cards have diet requirements and habitat conditions that must be meet in order to be placed down. Similar to Triple Triad - the edges of the cards represent possible environment connections and must be linked up to create a web. And similar to Phylo cards can only feed on certain species to stay alive.
My biggest barriers to get to this point was getting a selection of animals and insects that could work with these mechanics. Ultimately the answer was No, they wont. As i found out almost every species in NZ eats plants and some insects as well. This quickly made the Triple Triad formula obsolete as it was to unbalanced and slow going - as options were limited. So i decided to scrap it.
At this point i explored a variety of rules and mechanics such as pests eat other cards, pests can move, you must have resource cards in order to play certain species. Although varying the power of pests produced some interesting tactics and game changers the resource cards slowed things down and were ultimately a hindrance to play.
I explored using separate decks for both players, and combining them. Both produced similar results but failed to speed up Play and increase possible options.
At this stage of game development players only played cards next to their own cards to create their own food web. Only pest cards were used to interrupt the opponents food webs.
