I prime my models with black primer if I am painting with metallics, and white primer if I am using solid colours. As you can see, I do like my metallics a lot. I had metallic kakapo for playtesting and the children seemed to enjoy them more than the solid basic colours.
To do this, I apply a solid base color, then a darker shade wash to get into the cracks, and then I reapply the base. The wash is quite tricky for me to use because my edges are far too smoth and the wash doesn't settle properly...
